Customer Interview No.3

My interviews are based on a business venture I have been interesting in commencing for a very long time. A financial literacy program that will benefit college students and minorities is what my program consists of. In the beginning, I was interested in targeting the minority population in Palm Beach County, but as I transferred to the University of Florida, I also noticed the lack of financial literacy knowledge among college students. This led me to target college students for my interviews.
During the interviews, I noticed that non-business majors knew less on financial literacy, which made them my second focus for my program. For the minorities in particular, I was able to do my own research in community college. Which gives me a strong background on that segment.
In my third round of my interviews, I modified my set of questions. I knew that my target market needed the resources to be successful in the American economy, so for these five interviews I focused more on asking what were the resources they were given in their own communities.
List of Questions:
1.     What is your year and major?
2.     Where you given the right resources on personal finances in high school?
3.     Is there a financial literacy program in your hometown?
4.     Do you feel financially literate?

5.     What is your thought on a financial literacy program that will segment and benefit college students and minorities?

During these set of interviews, I became aware that underclassmen tend to be shy in front of a camera. But also they are the ones who tend to be less financially literate. What surprised me the most was listening to students say that they never receive any type of resources on personal finances in high school, which led to most of them confirming their lack of financially literacy knowledge.
In one of the questions, I asked them if they were aware of any program in their own community. All of them said no. This gave me an opportunity to understand that most of these programs will not do advertise and promote their programs properly.
The interviews overall allowed me to go out and talk to my target market.

  1. Hi Ana,

I want to first say that your business idea is a fantastic one and well needed. I do agree that a lot of people do tend to be shy in front of the camera but that might just be because they don't have the knowledge to answer your questions. A lot of people said that they were financially literate but its hard to believe they all are, at least thats how i feel. There are varying degrees to understanding finance and its a very important topic.

  2. Hello Ana, enjoyed reading your post and watching your interviews. You have a very interesting business idea. Personal finance is an extremely useful tool for college students, regardless of their major, to learn for the future. Once they graduate, they will have to handle their own finances. It is not suprising at the lack of students, especially younger ones, who do not have the knowledge to manage their own finances. I can attest that my high school did not offer a program or class with knowledge in that area. Check out my post if you want! http://ahamuf.blogspot.com/2016/02/interviewing-customers-no-3.html
