Customer Interview N.2

College students lack basic financial literacy, and it is important for these students to obtain the knowledge necessary to make the right financial decisions. Many are not acquainted in the process of paying taxes, budgeting, loan rates and risks, as well as future decisions for retirement.
In my first set of interviews, I was opened to interviewing any student, even if they had a business background, but during my second set of interviews, I decided to interview non-business Freshman and Sophomore students. This are students coming from High School, and sometimes without the proper knowledge on personal finances.
My venture seemed to have a better response from non-business majors since they are not the ones exposes to finances on a daily basis.
For the questions, I tweaked them in order to target the customers I was interviewing:
1.     Please tell me your year and major?
2.     What’s your definition of Financial Literacy?
3.     How literate do you feel when it comes to your finances?
4.     If there was a workshop you could sign up to, here in Gainesville, or back in your community, would you attend? If so, what skills do you expect to receive from this type of workshop?

From this set of customers, I noticed that they were not as comfortable to be recorded, which was a lot different from my last set of customers interviewed last week. I also learned that a younger population are less likely to understand personal finances. Also, in all of the interviews, the interest of learning the process of taxes was very prominent.

  1. Hi Ana,

Great job on going out and interviewing customers for the second time! I think it's a great idea to focus on specific group of customers and you went above and beyond that by adjusting your questions as well. I'm not sure if you used this business opportunity/idea for the last interviewing customers assignment but perhaps make that a little bit clearer so as get some feedback about the venture itself. Keep it up!

I didn't do this particular assignment but feel free to checkout my blog:

  2. Hey Ana,

I enjoyed watching your videos and think you have a great set of interviewing skills. I like your opportunity a lot and think it would be extremely beneficial to students to have a financial literacy class available to them. It was funny to see students who were unfamiliar with the phrase try to guess the definition. Although your interviewees did not seems that comfortable, you seemed very comfortable in conducting the interviews, and professional, which I think is something I might have lacked because I was so nervous!

Feel free to check out my second set of interviews here:

  3. Hello, I really enjoyed how you went about your interviews and you were very detailed about everything that you were doing. I think that your idea is very good being that when I came into college I knew nothing about actually being an adult and the things that come with it. I think every student needs this before or either their first year in college.

  4. Ana,
Your interviews highlight the fact the most college students do not have financial literacy. Their lack of understanding on how to manage their own finances could prove to be a big problem for them in the future when they begin having more expenses and money to deal with. I think that a simple workshop that teaches basic finance skills is a great idea that should be implemented here at UF. Great post!
